EST Stage 30: Ghol to Ghisar

Ghol to Ghisar

via Kolyachi Naal › Ambewasti › Hirdichi Daand › Upshalwasti › Gawli Khind

A trail rerouted by a conversation with a firewood collector — this stage crosses the fragile, undocumented Tikpol Valley, where houses and cattle share one roof and the old paths still do real work.

This stage is walkable in monsoon — the main challenge is whiteouts on the more exposed contour and saddle sections.

Route Description

Ghol›Kolyachi Naal›Ambewasti›Hirdicha Daand›Nivguni›Upshalwasti›Gawali Khind›Ghisar

LEG 01

Ghol → Ambewasti (via Kolyachi Naal)

Local rerouteGully climbPlateau

The original plan out of Ghol heads for the saddle between Ghol and Dapsare, then takes a long way round to Ambe Hill. It works on paper, but it's inefficient — road sections, unnecessary detours.

From Ghol, take the improved route via Kolyachi Naal instead. The climb is steady — around 200 m over roughly 2 km — starting in open scrub, moving into forest, then opening onto the plateau of Ambe Hill.

Water: Ambewasti — one house, one family, and their cattle — is a good place to refill before continuing.

LEG 02

Ambewasti → Hirdichi Daand

Ridge descentEasy trail

From Ambewasti, the trail follows the nose of a ridge and drops cleanly to a small temple at Hirdichi Daand. This section is easy — the trail is visible, well-used, and there's no navigation challenge here.

LEG 03

Hirdichi Daand → Nivguni

Dry riverbedContour

From the temple, cross a dry riverbed and begin climbing again toward a ridge to the east. The trail contours along the north face through open scrub and gradually brings you to Nivguni.

LEG 04

Nivguni → Upshalwasti

Open contourWide views

Beyond Nivguni the terrain opens up completely — a large, exposed landscape with wide views. The trail contours at around 750 m to reach Upshalwasti. This stretch feels less like a forest hike and more like moving freely across open terrain; some sections are proper trail, some are wide unpaved track, but navigation stays mostly straightforward.

LEG 05

Upshalwasti → Ghisar (via Gawli Khind)

Mountain saddleRidge descent

From Upshalwasti, the trail continues toward the saddle at Gawli Khind — the terrain naturally funnels you into the pass as you approach. From there, a ridge descent brings you down to Ghisar, marking the end of the stage.

How to Reach

In documentation

Details to reach from nearest town and village is being compiled and will be published soon.

The Bus–Hike–Bus system
  1. Take a State Transport (ST) bus and reach your start village by evening.
  2. Stay the night in the village.
  3. Start early, hike the stage, reach the next village by evening.
  4. Either catch the first morning bus out — or stay the night and keep walking.

No car. No expensive taxi. No complicated planning.

It works across most of the EST because almost every village has a daily ST bus. Where the timing fails, hitchhiking is common along the route.

A mapped trail is part of a digital trail network on an open platform. An unmapped trail exists on the ground but hasn't been digitised yet — someone needs to hike it, record it, verify it and put it up so it becomes available for everyone.
