EST Stage 33: Singapur to Shirgaon

Singapur to Shirgaon

via Kelad › Madhe Ghat › Upandya Ghat › Ambenali Ghat › Khutaghat

A road-heavy stage in transition — quiet ridgeline tarmac, two waterfall ghats worth a slow morning, and one serious overgrown climb through Khutaghat, cutting through an old-growth forest currently being logged.

Trail Pressure LOW — GOOD TO GO ▼

The roads on this stage see almost no vehicular traffic and the trails are quiet throughout. The one exception is the road near Madhe Ghat and Upandya Ghat, which locals report backs up into a 2 km tourist traffic jam when the waterfalls are running.

Good to go Localized — busy in spots Under pressure Over capacity — avoid

Trail Pressure is a HikeX signal that helps distribute hikers across the trail network, reducing pressure on overcrowded routes and helping prevent places from being loved to death.

Seasonal Conditions

⚠ JUN⚠ JUL⚠ AUG⚠ SEP

This route is hikeable in monsoon, but two things get harder.

  • Road congestion and tourist crowds near Madhe Ghat and Upandya Ghat as visitors come for the waterfalls.
  • The Khutaghat bushwhack becomes noticeably more difficult in the wet.

LEG 01

Singapur → Kelad

Road walkRidgeline

The stage opens with a 12.5 km road walk south to Kelad, running along the top of a ridgeline with open sightlines in every direction, passing Kusarpet along the way. Vehicular traffic is minimal — quiet rural roads, unlikely to see more than a handful of vehicles the whole way, which also means hitchhiking isn't really an option. The elevation drop is gentle, just a couple hundred metres over the whole stretch, so it's not physically demanding — but it is a road, and it's a long one.

**There are no water sources on this section — carry at least 2 litres from Singapur before starting, and don't expect to find anything along the ridgeline.**

Once at Kelad, consider the Madhe Ghat–Upandya Ghat loop before continuing (see Side Trails below).

LEG 02

Kelad → Ambenali

RoadOpen scrubGullyGhat descentPlateau contour

From Kelad, the trail heads toward Ambenali Ghat, passing Pudchayawadi: a short road stretch, then a drop into open scrub, then a small gully carrying the trail down to Ambenali. This route sees little local use anymore, but the trail is still intact and it's a fairly direct descent. Wildlife is active here, especially barking deer — high chance you'll hear them well before you see anything.

Once you drop about 200 m — from roughly the 700 m contour to the 500 m contour — the landscape opens into a wide, flat plateau, and the trail contours along this level all the way into Ambenali village.

LEG 03

Ambenali → Kumbheshivtar

Trail/road mixShepherd routes

About 3.5 km, dropping roughly 250 m to the base of the valley, passing Ambeshivtar along the way. The trails here are shepherd routes used seasonally by Dhangar communities — short, functional, well-worn in places.

LEG 04

Kumbheshivtar → Cheravwadi

Climb

From Kumbheshivtar, the trail climbs up to Cheravwadi.

LEG 05

Cheravwadi → Kund (Khutaghat)

Unmapped trailBushwhackingRock climbingScreeTall grass

This is the section on the entire stage that demands the most preparation: a 3 km trail with 600 m of elevation gain, and it hasn't been used by locals in a long time. The road detour to Shirgaon is far longer, which makes this the only efficient way through — but the numbers alone don't capture what it takes on the ground.

Between the 50 m and 350 m contour, a discernible trail passes a small temple, with old orange ribbons still tied to branches. Between the 350 m and 750 m contour, the trail effectively disappears — open forest thick with fallen and broken branches means constant stepping over or ducking under, slow going, followed by a short stretch of rock climbing on loose scree, then a sustained push through tall grass with no clear line and no water anywhere. You're relying on your sense of direction, your map, and your patience. Above this, the trail reappears on the open ridgeline and carries you the rest of the way into Kund.

Planning note: Khutaghat

For Khutaghat:

  • Carry a minimum of 2 litres of water from Cheravwadi — there's none on this trail.
  • Set aside 4 hours for this section (3 if moving very well, but plan for 4).
  • Don't underestimate how slow the 350–750 m middle stretch will make you.

LEG 06

Kund → Shirgaon

Road walkRolling terrain

The stage finishes with a 9 km road section, passing Shilimb along the way — rolling terrain, around 300 m up and 300 m down across the whole stretch, on a proper tar road with almost no traffic. Silent, open, and you can move at whatever pace suits you into Shirgaon.

Side Trails & Alternative Routes

SIDE TRAIL

Madhe Ghat – Upandya Ghat Loop, from Kelad

Waterfall ghatsLoop~2 hours

A short loop from Kelad through two ghat trails, both known for their waterfalls — a good, easy addition over a slow breakfast at Kelad. The trails themselves are genuinely lovely; the road nearby, by contrast, backs up into a 2 km tourist traffic jam when visitors come for the waterfalls, so stick to the trail rather than the road for this one. The loop gives a clear view down into the Konkan region and a good look at how these old ghat trails read the landscape and use the gradient.

How to Reach

In documentation

Details to reach from nearest town and village is being compiled and will be published soon.

The Bus–Hike–Bus system
  1. Take a State Transport (ST) bus and reach your start village by evening.
  2. Stay the night in the village.
  3. Start early, hike the stage, reach the next village by evening.
  4. Either catch the first morning bus out — or stay the night and keep walking.

No car. No expensive taxi. No complicated planning.

It works across most of the EST because almost every village has a daily ST bus. Where the timing fails, hitchhiking is common along the route.

Mapping Status

▼

A mapped trail is part of a digital trail network on an open platform. An unmapped trail exists on the ground but hasn't been digitised yet — someone needs to hike it, record it, verify it and put it up so it becomes available for everyone.
